The cancer Strategic Clinical Network (SCN) was the first of the four SCNs to hold a stakeholder event in the early summer of 2013, with the aim of identifying its work plan priorities.  The SCN is now well established with a clear work plan agreed by the Oversight and Planning Group (OPG).

Domain 1: Preventing people from dying prematurely

  • Diagnostic Capacity:  Agreed collaborative work programme with AHSN in endoscopy capacity review and modelling for future capacity planning. Joined National Endoscopy Engagement Team (chaired by National Clinical Director for diagnostic services) as consequence of colorectal project work
  • Early Detection: Department of Health (DH) funding secured to increase earlier detection of bowel cancer by enhancing screening uptake in conjunction with Public Health and the Bowel Screening Southern Hub, with attendant increase in cancer detection rates across Wessex. The outcome will inform the national Domain 1 Early detection Strategy. Wider Local Awareness and Early Detection Initiative (LAEDI) programme plan agreed to disseminate best practice across other long term condition (LTC) areas.
  • Peer Review: Establishing reinvigorated wide network of Site Specific Groups supported by providers across Wessex. Supported the Specialised Commissioning team to interrogate regional provider returns regarding derogation in cancer and Peer Review / Improving Outcomes Guidance.

Domain 2: Enhancing the quality of life for people with long term conditions

  • Integration: Facilitated agreement of regional communications pathway patients with metastatic spinal cord compression. Oncology e-Prescribing resource secured and project board established to implement Wessex wide through 2014/15. Acute Oncology Service sub group established to reduce variation across Wessex and share learning with other long term condition services.

Domain 3: Helping people recover from episodes of ill health or following injury

  • Rehabilitation: Agreement of CCGs to include elements of Recovery Package (treatment summary) in 2014-15 commissioning intentions, anticipating the introduction of CQUIN thereafter.
